This trip to Newfoundland was initiated at the Calgary Flying Club. Nine planes with nineteen passengers made the journey. Departure times from the Springbank Airport varied depending on individual schedules. The plan was to meet up in Quebec City the evening of Sunday June 12th and then proceed to Newfoundland en masse. It is quite difficult to maintain cohesion with such a large group. This is complicated not only by weather conditions but also by individual pilot qualifications, for instance those that are IFR (instrument) rated to fly in non-visual weather and those that are only VFR (visual) rated.
The weather was to be a factor in that we were unable to join the group in Quebec City Sunday night. From that point onward, we were unable to connect with the group. For the most part, our journal documents the journey of Harry and I, flying a single engine Diamond DA 40 (C-FRTY), and John and Lynn Steele, flying a Cessna 210 (C-GKMJ).
